Instructors’ Resources

Welcome to the instructors' guide accompanying The Ethical Journalist. We hope the material provided here will make it easier for you to use the book for your course for the first time, and will continue to support your teaching in subsequent semesters.

All of the resources in this guide require a user ID and password.

  • Model course schedules are intended to help you plan the semester.
  • Teaching suggestions offer ideas about how to present each chapter to your students, including suggestions for audiovisual presentations and practical exercises.
  • PowerPoint presentations are offered for each chapter (except Chapter 20, which is a summary of the book's lessons). In addition, there is a separate PowerPoint presentation on how the class could approach the case studies.
  • Quizzes are provided for each chapter (except Chapter 20). You could use them in an online course-management system to guide the students in their preparation for class and to provide a grade incentive for reading the assignments. Or you could select quiz questions for inclusion in exams.
  • Audiovisual aids offer suggestions for class presentations and explain how the aids can be obtained. A detailed lesson plan, including an advance student handout, is provided for the film Absence of Malice, which is useful in teaching the principles of the SPJ ethics code.
  • Suggested exam strategy includes a discussion of an exam strategy and examples of exam questions for the course.

The following practical exercises in the instructor's guide may be useful in teaching Chapters 8 and 10.

  • Applying the Decision Template contains suggestions for teaching Chapter 8.
  • Using The New York Times' Ethics Code is suggested for teaching Chapter 10. The interactive exercise shows students how they could use The New York Times' model code to answer typical conflict-of-interest questions.

The instructor's guide also contains Study Resources for each chapter, and additional Point of View essays and Case Studies relating to the content of various chapters. This information is also available to students under the "Browse by Chapter" tab on this site.
